The US government is at war with TikTok again. This time, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) took over. Its leader, Brendan Carr, wrote letters to Alphabet CEO (Google’s parent company) Sundar Pichai and Apple CEO Tim Cook demanding that TikTok be removed from the Google Play and App Stores.
Carr is convinced that the Chinese app is spying on US citizens. It collects too much confidential information and sends it straight to Beijing. The commissioner said that TikTok can save drafts, has access to search history, intercepts button presses, tracks biometrics, and has access to text, images, and videos from a smartphone’s clipboard.
Brendan Carr called TikTok not just an app for sharing funny videos and memes, but “a wolf in sheep’s clothing.” As evidence, he cited a study that showed that Chinese TikTok employees had access to the personal data of American users. The official wants Google and Apple to either remove TikTok from their app stores or provide a written explanation as to why they can do so by July 8.
