Morning smoothies are now even healthier
For most children and even some adults, swallowing tablets or pills is a difficult task. To make these medications easier to take, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Brigham Women’s Hospital have created a drug ingestion gel.
Gels are made from vegetable oils, such as sesame oil, can be made in a variety of textures, from a thickened drink to a yogurt-like substance. Gels are stable without refrigeration. They can help adults who have difficulty swallowing pills, such as the elderly or people who have had a stroke and children.
The researchers showed that in animal studies they were able to use drug delivery gels to treat infectious diseases at the same doses that can be delivered by tablets or capsules. The research team is now planning clinical trials that are expected to begin in a few months.
