Proponents of continuous self-development strive every day to become “the best version of themselves.” A huge role in this matter is played by the rejection of bad habits and their replacement with useful ones. With what harms our health and life in general, many are well aware – we are talking about smoking, drinking alcohol, unhealthy eating, and so on. Without a doubt, they all cause us great harm, because alcohol abuse alone destroys families, destroys internal organs and is one of the causes of oncological diseases. However, there are habits in the world that are considered harmful, but at the same time can be beneficial. It sounds like something impossible, but it really is – at least there are scientific results that prove their benefits.
Swear words lessen the pain
Let’s start with the most common bad habit that many people don’t even notice anymore. When something bad happens to a person or it just hurts him, he begins to utter obscene words – sometimes they pour out of his mouth reflexively, unexpectedly even for the person himself. In society, it is believed that obscenity in the lexicon spoils a person and demonstrates his lack of culture. Because of this, some people try to get rid of it and even punish themselves a little for swear words.
Perhaps you should not scold yourself for swear words. Scientists have good reason to believe that swearing helps people cope with stress and physical pain. Once an experiment was conducted in which two groups of volunteers dipped their hand into cold water. Those who were allowed to swear were able to keep their hand in the icy water longer than others. Exactly how the pronunciation of the mat dulls physical pain, scientists are not clear. However, practice shows that foul language helps us in life, although from the outside it does not look very nice. So is it worth it to completely wean yourself to swear?
Biting your nails is good for the immune system
What else is condemned in society is the habit of biting nails. This habit usually begins in early childhood and sometimes persists into adulthood. To wean children from this, parents take them to a psychologist or buy special products with a bitter taste that are applied to their fingers. The habit of biting your nails can really be dangerous, because parasites and pathogenic bacteria can multiply on them – no one wants to get infected, right ?

It is believed that biting your nails is not so bad either.
However, there are scientists who compare the habit of biting nails with a “natural vaccine”. They believe that when children are exposed to potentially dangerous bacteria, their immune systems learn to resist them. Many people may disagree with this opinion, but, nevertheless, it sounds interesting. In any case, if a person bites his nails in adulthood, it is better to get rid of this habit. And about children, everything is ambiguous.
Daytime sleep improves productivity
Recently, scientists announced that the habit of sleeping during the day is a clear sign of the development of dangerous diseases. Based on this, we can conclude that it is better for people not to sleep during the daytime, but not everything is so simple. The fact is that daytime sleep is an alarming sign only because it indicates a bad night’s sleep. But poor sleep at night just leads to the development of a number of dangerous diseases . So daytime sleep is not always bad.

You can sleep during the day, but not more than 30 minutes
Some scientists even advise everyone to take 30 minutes a day to take a little nap. In the first twenty minutes, a person produces the hormone of happiness serotonin, which can increase productivity. The main thing is not to overdo it and not sleep for more than half an hour, because in this case the person falls into a deep sleep and subsequently the rest of the day will probably feel overwhelmed.
Drinking coffee improves thinking
Many people love the simple habits of drinking coffee in the morning – some say that they wake up only to enjoy their favorite drink. However, we are regularly frightened by reports that coffee is addictive, damages teeth, destroys bones, and so on. Many of these statements are myths. So people who are trying to stop drinking coffee can calm down a bit – for many, the favorite drink is not as scary as it is said to be.

Coffee is not as bad as they say
There are reasons to believe that coffee does more good than harm. In the course of scientific studies, it was found that this drink reduces the development of heart rhythm disturbances by about 6%. There is also evidence that it reduces the risk of developing diabetes, prostate, liver and breast cancer. In 2021, it became known that coffee protects the brain from aging.
