Jon Baptiste Full Biography

American musician and composer Jon Baptiste combines New Orleans jazz with a vibrant mixture of funk, pop and blues in his works. The work of the universal artist received recognition not only from listeners, but also from critics.

Childhood and youth

Jon Baptiste was born on November 11, 1986 in Metairie, Louisiana. The childhood of the future artist was spent in New Orleans and its environs.

He comes from a famous New Orleans dynasty of musicians: his father Michael Baptiste was a bassist, his uncle Lionel Batiste played in a brass band, his cousin Russell Batiste is a drummer who performed with the Funky Meters.

Therefore, the fate of the boy was predetermined: he was destined to study music and devote his life to it.

Little Jon Baptiste learned to play drums and piano. He got his first stage experience as a child, performing in the Batiste Brothers Band. Jon Baptiste developed his keyboard skills by playing songs from video games such as Street Fighter Alpha and Final Fantasy VII.

Music

Jon graduated from the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts in 2004. A year later, he released his debut album, Times in New Orleans, featuring drummer Jason Marsalis, saxophonist Donald Harrison Jr., and trumpeter Christian Scott. Batista was then only 17 years old.

Having received his secondary education, the young man entered the Juilliard School in New York. In the meantime, he began performing with bassist Phil Kuen and drummer Joe Saylor. Their joint work formed the basis of the second album Live in New York: At the Rubin Museum of Art.

Later, saxophonist Eddie Barbash joined the band. This is how the Stay Human ensemble was born. During that period, most of Batista’s creative biography was associated with this musical project.

The group began to play open-air concerts and quickly attracted attention due to the combination of jazz, pop music and gospel music with elements of the blues.

The debut mini-album Stay Human was released in 2011. Two years later, a LP was released, called Social Music. The album reached the top of the Billboard Jazz Chart.

In 2015, the Jon Baptiste Band was responsible for the musical score for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. A year later, the band expanded their discography with the mini-album The Late Show EP, which included the introductory and final screensavers of the TV show, as well as live performances recorded during commercial breaks.

The release debuted at number three on the US Jazz Albums Chart. Some time later, the virtuoso pianist released the Christmas disc Christmas with Jon Batiste.

Jon Baptiste’s debut solo album Hollywood Africans was released in the fall of 2018. The African-American roots of the musician found the brightest embodiment in him. Baptiste managed to seamlessly combine early New Orleans jazz with modern variations and pop music.

The record, which struck the listeners with extraordinary freshness and color, took second place on the Billboard chart and brought the artist a Grammy nomination for the single Saint James Infirmary.

2020 has been just as productive for Batista. First, Jon Baptiste released the album Meditations, recorded with guitarist Corey Wong, for which he was re-nominated for a Grammy Award.

In late May, after the murder of African -American George Floyd by police officer Derek Chauvin, mass protests began in the United States. Baptiste did not stand aside and presented to the public the song We Are, which has become a kind of symbol of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Later that year, he composed the score for the animated film Soul and released an accompanying album, Music from and Inspired by Soul. Directed by Pete Docter and Kemp Paeurs, the animated film won a Golden Globe and an Oscar for Best Original Score Born to Play.

Batista’s eighth studio album, titled We Are, was released in March 2021. Although the work on the LP was carried out long before the events of 2020, it reflected events such as the coronavirus pandemic and mass protests.

The recording featured singer Mavis Staples, writer Zadie Smith, singer PJ Morton, and trumpeter and trombonist Trombone Shorty. In an interview with Atwood Magazine, the musician called the album “the culmination of life at the moment.” The artist shot the video for the song Freedom from the LP We Are in New Orleans, where he comes from.

In the fall of 2021, singer Madonna held a private concert in Harlem, which was timed to coincide with the release of her documentary film Madame X. Throughout the evening, the pop diva was accompanied by Jon Baptiste and his band Stay Human.
