Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam (/ˈeɪkɒn/), popularly known as Akon, is a Senegalese American singer, songwriter, record producer, and entrepreneur. Akon was born on April 16, 1973 in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.
During Akon’s days in Senegal, he learned a lot about music from his parents who were also entertainers. His father, Mor Thiam was a popular Senegalese percussionist while his mother was a professional dancer.
From this kind of background, Akon was able to harness and develop his musical abilities in various ways. He learned how to play drums, guitar, piano – almost five musical instruments. Soon his family relocated to the United States.

This relocation posed a challenge to him as a young chap. He had problems with settling down in the United States. Later, things became difficult for Akon’s family when they moved to Atlanta. Akon and his older brother had to sponsor themselves in school.
At the age of fifteen, Akon settled in New Jersey. Those youthful years of his in New Jersey were fraught with crime and things related.
His youthful years in the United States were controversial but the official account is that he was a member of a car theft organization. Although there are no records of the rapper going to jail or convicted of a crime.
However, there are records of the rapper being investigated by detectives around that time which is related to auto theft.
Eventually, he transformed from his criminal ways and channeled his youthful energy towards music, recording demos and songwriting.
Akon Start to Fame
Akon rose to fame upon the release of his song “Locked Up” featuring Styles P which was his first single from Trouble- his debut album.
In 2006, the rapper released his second album “Konvicted” which sold over 286,000 copies in the first week of its release. The album debuted at Number two in the US, and within weeks after release, the album received a platinum certification. The album made it to platinum triple times in the United States.
Later, he founded Konvict Muzik and Konlive Distribution record labels. They served as home for celebrities such as T-Pain, Lady Gaga, Jeffree Star, and many more.
