Will Smith may be hearing back about potential sanctions for his actions at the Oscars sooner than expected. The Academy board of governors will now be meeting today, Friday 8th of April.
This is to discuss any ramifications for the King Richard star following his onstage altercation.
The Academy had originally scheduled to meet on April 18th and the new date is 10 days earlier.
The Academy Statement
In a letter to the board obtained by NBC news, academy president David Rubin explained that the meeting was pushed up after Will Smith resigned from the academy this past Friday.
Following Mr Smith’s resignation of his academy membership on Friday April 1, suspension or expulsion are no longer a possibility and legally prescribed timetable no longer applies. It is in the best interest of all involved for this to be handled in a timely fashion.
Will Smith announced his resignation in a statement last week and said that he would accept any further consequences the board deems appropriate.
He wrote in part:
My actions of the 90 fourth Academy Awards presentation were shockingly painful and inexcusable. The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance and global audiences at home. I betrayed the trust of the academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work.
The Academy Starts Disciplinary Procedure against Will Smith
Two days before Will Smith’s resignation, the academy announced that they had started disciplinary proceedings against the Oscar winner.
Saying he violated their standards of conduct when he in came to “physical contact, abusive or threatening behaviour and compromising the integrity of the Academy”
The organization statement read in part:
Mr Smith’s actions at the 90 fourth Oscars were deeply shocking traumatic event to witness in person and on television. Mr rock we apologize to you for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your resilience in that moment. We also apologize to our nominees, guests and viewers for what transpired during what should have been a celebratory event. Things unfolded in a way we could not have anticipated, what we would like to clarify that Mr Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused. We also recognize we could have handled the situation differently.
On Oscars night, Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage. This came after the comedian made a joke about the hair of his wife– Jada Pinkett Smith. Jada has been open about her alopecia.
In an Instagram statement the day after the slap, the bad boys for life star apologized to Chris.
